Lorien & Early

Lorien & Early

Polly Lorien and Bob Early have been drawing in eclectic audiences and knockin’ their socks off since 2010. From different musical backgrounds, their individual styles meld into an original bluesyjazzyfolky sound known as “Hickster Jive.”

This album provided an opportunity to explore and innovate, giving each song its own unique flavor. From the straight blues sound of "Naive" to the reggae-esque vibe of "Mama's Papa," from the haunting cello on "Nothin' New" to the Bob Wills tribute "Sweet Hell," the record is held together by the soulful voice and thoughtful lyrics of Polly Lorien and the inspired guitar and mandolin solos of Bob Early.

For this debut studio album, Polly and Bob were fortunate to work with engineer and producer Andy Owens at Lonesome Pine Recording Studio in Boone, NC. Although they usually perform as a duo, Lorien and Early were delighted to work with a variety of studio musicians for this album. Cameron Owens contributed to every track on bass and also did two tracks on cello. Lucas Moomaw had a wonderful whirlwind session resulting in two tracks with drums. Cody McGuire stopped in for a rousing banjo track, and Stuart Owens added fiddle highlights to one saucy number. Andy Owens even got in on the fun, whippin' out his mandolin for the album's final track. The recording process was a wonderful experience, and a grand time was had by all!

When the Rockies and New Orleans meet, it sounds something like Hickster Jive: soulful blues with deep roots and a hipster edge.
