Distant Voices, Echoes In Time
Distant Voices, Echoes In Time is a collection of solo Native American flute improvisations. There are no other instruments, no sounds from nature, no chanting, no drumming…just the flute echoing off rock canyon walls and reminding us that at one time life was different, the inhabitants lead simpler lives, and nature and spirit were an ever-present aspect of those lives. If you will imagine for a moment, a young Indian boy from those times not so very long ago, sitting high up in a dwelling built from the surrounding stones of Mother Earth. He is contemplating the day before him, thinking of a young Indian girl he would like to impress…then he begins to play. The sound from the Lakota love flute resonates out, echoing off the canyon walls for all to hear. He knows that in his culture, the native flute and its sound is adored and appreciated by Indian girls old enough to take a partner, and his ability to play will help attract a mate. He draws inspiration from the sounds around him as he imitates the creature
